What causes a toothache?

Toothache severity can range from slight discomfort and sensitivity to severe throbbing or sharp pain. Furthermore, causes can stem from a wide variety of issues. A tooth may be cracked or have other visible traumatic damage. Or, it may have a cavity that has progressed and led to infection. Additionally, the enamel may have eroded and exposed the more sensitive dentin underneath.

How is it treated?

In any of the above cases, the only way to relieve a toothache is to address the problem and repair the tooth. This treatment may involve various restorative procedures, such as a cavity filling, onlay/inlay, dental bonding, a dental crown, or a root canal. If there is an infection present, we may recommend additional periodontal treatments to address gum disease. In more severe cases, we may recommend removing the tooth altogether. In those rare instances, we then have several tooth replacement options to consider.
